FAQs - Bridges

What is a Bridge?

A Bridge is a prosthetic appliance that replaces missing teeth by being permanently attached to remaining teeth. It is a false tooth fixed to an adjacent natural tooth, usually a series of crowns joined together with a false tooth suspended between them.

There are many designs of bridges for use in different situations, your dentist will discuss various bridge options available to you.

Can I have a bridge to replace missing teeth?

Bridges are only possible if you have strong enough teeth either side of the gap. Your dentist will help you decide what is best for you.

How do I look after my bridge?

A bridge should be cleaned the same way as natural teeth. Brush the surfaces twice daily. It is essential that you keep the area around your bridge clean. Gentle but thorough brushing of your gums and cleaning in-between the retaining teeth and under the bridge (superfloss is recommended for this) is essential to elongate the life of your new bridge. Problems tend to occur in the surrounding gums and tooth roots rather than the bridge itself.
