FAQs - Children

When should I take my child to see the dentist?

It is a good idea to bring your baby or young child with you on check-up appointments so that they become familiar with the surroundings and the dental team. The earlier in life that the dentist sees your child the better, as there will rarely be any treatment needed, a sticker reward helps to make a visit to the dentist something to look forward to.

At Pennypot Dental we host special children days to ease your children into visiting the dentist. They will meet either the tooth fairy or their favourite character who will teach them about oral health and a healthy diet. Visit our children pages to find out more.

When will my child’s teeth come through?

‘Baby teeth’ are already growing when your baby is born. They normally start to show from around 3 to 6 months. All 20 baby teeth should be through by the age of 2.

The first permanent molar (back) teeth will appear at about age 6. All permanent teeth should be visible by age 13 except the wisdom teeth which start from age 18-25 years of age.

When do I start brushing my child’s teeth?

Plaque will start to form on your child’s teeth and gums as soon as the first tooth erupts. It is essential to develop a suitable brushing routine with your child at an early age that will continue throughout their life. Cuddle your baby in a firm hold on your lap, face a mirror and look over baby’s shoulder.

Use a baby toothbrush and a tiny smear of toothpaste (special baby/infant toothpaste contains a controlled fluoride amount specifically for their needs) gently massage around the teeth and gums. Babies enjoy this and will gradually want to do it themselves. As they grow older more responsibility can be given but children cannot be expected to clean unsupervised until around 8 years old.
