Avoiding tooth Decay

- Avoiding giving your child unnecessary sugars is a good way to establish healthy eating patterns to protect your child’s teeth for life.
- Milk and water are the only drinks that you should give to your child.
- Restrict sugar-containing foods and drinks to mealtimes.
- Encourage your child to snack on vegetables, fruit, cheese, bread and unsweetened yogurt.
- Remember that it is the frequency of consumption of sugary snacks that matters- if your child eats a bar of chocolate after a meal in one go, that is much better than dipping into a bag of sweets every 15 minutes throughout the day.
- Bring your child to regular check-ups so that any tooth decay can be detected early by the dentist.
- Avoid fizzy drinks whether diet or regular. The sugar in them can lead to decay while the acid attacks the tooth enamel causing erosion.
