Root Canal Treatment

There is nothing quite like toothache – especially when the tooth’s inner pulp has become infected, causing a debilitating pain that stops you from eating and sleeping.

Root canal treatment gets right to the heart of the infection. It is a skilled, gentle procedure that most general dentists can perform. For more complex cases, Pennypot Dental have enlisted an endodontic specialist, with years of experience in pain-free and comfortable treatment.

He obtained his Master’s of Restorative Dentistry in Endodontology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was awarded a distinction in his Master of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontology (MClinDent) from the University of London. Steve is the only specialist endodontist with these qualifications working in East Kent, so you can be sure that you are in good hands!

Root Canal FAQs

Root Canal

A few weeks after root canal treatment has been completed, a new crown is usually recommended to protect the tooth. This will allow you to eat on the tooth confidently, knowing it will not fracture.

Due to the intricate nature of root canal treatment, it usually takes 1-2 appointments. Each appointment is 60 to 90 minutes long. The amount of time required depends on the number of root canals identified in the tooth and the complexity of the root canal anatomy (e.g. how curved the root is, how narrow the root canal is).

The alternative treatment option to the root canal is usually an extraction. Losing a tooth can make it difficult to smile, eat or speak. Although nothing is as good as a natural tooth, gaps can be filled with a denture, bridge or implant. This would incur further costs.

General dentists can perform most aspects of dental treatment, including root canal treatment. More complex cases may be referred to our top endodontic specialist, Dr Steve Williams.

Dr Steven Williams qualified from Guys’ Hospital Dental School. He later obtained his Master of Restorative Dentistry in Endodontology (MRD) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was awarded a distinction in his Master of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontology (MClinDent) from the University of London. He is currently a Postgraduate Tutor on the endodontology postgraduate program at King’s College London training future specialists. He is the only Specialist Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist) with these qualifications working in East Kent.
